The story

It’s our last issue of the school year! Crazy, right?

Soooo…

We’re going to reminisce about the year. The good, the bad — all of it. And to prove that we actually learned something in Roots of Thought, we’ll tell it to you like a hero’s journey. Where we, Runaway Bulldog, are the hero. Because who else would it be?

Once upon a time

Superintendent Chip McGee resigned, and Mr. Fournier was thrown into Bedford parent fire — nothing scarier. And so, we created Runaway Bulldog to keep the people of Bedford informed in such a time of need, thus saving the day. Don’t you feel saved? Well, you’re welcome. We kept watching (and reporting), as Zanna Blaney, the Dean of Student Services, was put on leave, and the two BHS counselors were exonerated.

Then…

These two guys showed up talking about building apartments, over wetlands! Wetlands! Just assuming that their project is more important than the frogs. And not only that, they think they can make up their own math! 200 parking spaces and 90 units does not equal 25 cars leaving every morning. It’s too much for us. Now, we just smile and nod.

But…

We kept thinking happy thoughts. Golf won the state title, then boys soccer, then Sue Mullen won state rep. Eh? Pretty freaking good. And, as we worshipped the football team in all their glory, they were undefeated and state champs, and their kicker made state history! It’s no big deal. We’re not ones to brag.

So we moved on…

We were suffering through the budget season, bored beyond belief, when bam! The girls varsity basketball coach, Sue Thomas, was fired over Christmas break. And something about snowflakes. And then, a couple of months later, an actual snow day! March 4, 2019 — a day that will live in infamy. You know, right after Pearl Harbor.

And to close winter out…

Hockey and alpine finished off the winter seasons with state championships! Whoop whoop!

So things were going smoothly…

In the March elections, John Schneller replaced Jen DeAngelis on the school board. But at the same time, the budget didn’t pass! And yes, that meant that there would be no Memorial nurse’s office renovations, or football field returfing, but it also meant that we had to got to continue talking about the budget.

And right when we thought the year was winding down…

Bam! Again! The Zanna Blaney lawsuit! Obviously, sucks for the school board (and poor Mr. Schneller — who thought he’d missed that particular disaster), but, once again, something for us to talk about besides the budget. Nope, sorry, the freaking budget.

But, happy thoughts!

The robotics team and DECA went to internationals, and we’re banking on both tennis teams winning their state titles. And maybe girls lacrosse. We have hope!

The Runaway

We are laying down our swords for the summer, as we have fought fake news, bad math, an angry nordic team, more fake news, and just a sprinkling of Bedford parents. Your heroes will be back next year. Until then, we’re going to make some popcorn and watch how this lawsuit turns out.

And for your CURRENT news

What to say…

When you’re now realizing that the apartments issue was never resolved…

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Last week, the developers went back to the town planning board with their revised proposal. They lowered the size of the complex and plan to just build around the wetlands. And you know, we think it’s really nice that they’re giving their residents a taste of nature. Right in the middle of the parking lot. However, the board had several other issues, one being with the proposed sewer connections. After two hours of hearings, the board sent the developers away to try, try again on June 10th. So, popcorning and watching.

When people ask you about your summer plans…

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. That’s what track and field are doing right now, and it must feel good! They just finished up their season last Saturday. The boys finished in third, and the girls finished in ninth. For the boys, Zach Verow was first in the 400m, Lucien Mumpini placed second in the triple jump, and Jackson Wiley placed second in Javelin. For the girls, Anna Harnsberger placed third in the 3200m, Sheridan McGadden placed second in the 100m hurdles, Veronica Gikas, Hannah Mikol, Brianna CoCo, and Taryn Naftali placed third in the 4x100m relay, and Haley Schmitt, Lily Mooney, Avery Houghton, and Carly Rinko placed third in the 4x800m relay. Now, you guys can eat a ton of ice cream and never think about treadmills again.
